Matthias Halwart, Team Leader of Sustainable Aquaculture (Global and Regional Processes) at the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, recently graced Algal Bioactives and Bioproducts (ABB) with his presence. His visit on December 1st, 2023, was initiated by a brief tour of the laboratory, followed by a comprehensive briefing by Prof. Yandu Lu on the research achievements, ongoing projects, and future plans of ABB.
During the visit, Mr. Halwart demonstrated significant interest in algal applications and highlighted the unfortunate neglect of algae as a species. He emphasized the necessity to advocate for the inclusion of this vital living species in the United Nations Sustainable Aquaculture programs. Engaging in lively discussions, he generously shared invaluable insights derived from his extensive global work experience in aquaculture.
The central theme of the discussion revolved around the utilization of microalgae for sustainable development and the improvement of livelihoods for small and medium-scale farmers and impoverished communities. We express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Matthias Halwart for sharing his wisdom and enriching the global experience and expertise in Sustainable Aquaculture. His visit not only paved the way for recognizing and enhancing the contribution of algae to global aquaculture development but also served as a catalyst for researchers and students within our group to submit a proposal on algae to the Global Committee of Fisheries (COFI), aiming to positively impact society.
Professor Yi Xin, Dr. Marasri Ruengjitchatchawalya (King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi) and Dr. Mujeeb Ur Rehma join the visit.
